Why invest in South Africa?

first_imgWith its wealth of minerals, South Africa is one of the most resource-rich regions on the planet. (Image Brand South Africa)South Africa is one of the world’s most promising emerging markets; it is sophisticated, innovative and diverse. Its strategic location at the southern tip of Africa provides an accessible gateway to the rest of the continent, a market of some one billion people. In addition, South Africa itself is worth looking at for investment opportunities: it is one of the economic powerhouses of Africa, is a member of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), and plays a critical role in local development initiatives. The country also currently holds the chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).It has sophisticated financial, legal and telecommunications sectors, with several global business process outsourcing operations.South Africa has a strong tertiary education sector that ensures the availability of highly skilled graduates. Legislation promotes training and skills development, creating an environment to fast-track the building of world-class skills and competences. It has world-class infrastructure, exciting innovation, research and development capabilities and a strong manufacturing base.SA has huge potentialThere is a wealth of natural resources, including gold, coal, platinum, iron ore, manganese, nickel, uranium and chromium. International exploration companies, notably in the oil and gas sector, are particularly interested in South Africa’s potential. The country is a regional leader in the agriculture and agro-processing sector and is at the forefront of developing green technologies and industries, creating new and sustainable jobs in the process and reducing environmental impact. One of the main reasons South Africa is becoming a popular trade and investment destination is because the country ensures it can meet the specific trade and investment requirements of prospective investors: it has a large number of investment incentives and industrial financing interventions. Trade rules favour a further expansion in South Africa’s burgeoning levels of international trade.A number of international airlines service the country, with good flight connections into the rest of the continent.Last, but not least, South Africa is a country of great natural beauty and warm and welcoming people – and has a reputation for delivering value-for-money. From the shores of the oceans to the wildlife reserves of the Highveld to the diversity of its eight World Heritage sites and its culturally significant places, South Africa is an attractive business and leisure destination.Sources: Department of Trade and Industry, Southern African Development Community, South African Yearbook: 2016/17Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Google Introduces Better Word and PowerPoint Previews for Google Docs Mobile

first_imgWhy IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Just last week, Google introduced better Microsoft Word previews for the desktop version of Gmail. Today, Google also launched a similar feature for the mobile version of Google Docs, the company’s online office suite. Now, Android, iPhone and iPad users can see high-fidelity previews of their Word, PowerPoint and PDF documents right in their mobile browsers. These previews retain almost all of the formatting from the original document, including headlines and columns, as well as footnotes and endnotes. Until now, you had to download these documents to view them on your mobile device. In the mobile previewer, you can pan and zoom within a page. On Apple’s platforms, you can also use the pinch-to-zoom gesture to zoom in or out.Sadly, the new previewer does not support Excel spreadsheets. Given that a lot of people use spreadsheets in lieu of a full-blown database to store information, it would be nice if Google allowed its users to preview these documents as well. Docs Only: No New Previewer for Mobile Gmail (Yet)Just a few days ago, Google also launched a new version of its document previewer for the desktop version of Gmail. This new previewer also provides users with high-fidelity previews and replaces the old “view as HTML” feature in Gmail with a far superior offering. For now, though, the mobile version of Gmail does not offer the new Google Docs previews yet, though we would be surprised if Google didn’t add this feature very soon. The Pope “Likes” Social Media

first_imgPope Benedict XVI delivered a message on social media and online communications today, telling Catholic Internet users to be respectful of others online and to not focus too much on their online popularity. The message was part of the church’s annual World Day of Social Communications.During his speech last year, Benedict had urged church leaders to embrace digital tools in order to communicate their message to laypeople. This year’s message calls for those online to adopt a “Christian style presence” and to be “respectful and sensitive.” Those words were aimed in part, according to the head of the Vatican’s social communications office Archbishop Claudio Celli, at some conservative Catholic blogs, YouTube channels, and websites whose behavior may not be “appropriate” and whose rhetoric may be incendiary.“The new technologies allow people to meet each other beyond the confines of space and of their own culture, creating in this way an entirely new world of potential friendships. This is a great opportunity, but it also requires greater attention to and awareness of possible risks. Who is my ‘neighbour’ in this new world?” – Pope Benedict XVIMuch of the Pope’s message today about online communications echoed the themes from previous years: the Internet is both a benefit and a danger; social networks can build community, but virtual relationships should never replace real friendships. The Pope stressed honesty and openness, warning against creating artificial online personae.“There exists a Christian way of communication which is honest and open, responsible and respectful of others,” Benedict wrote. “To proclaim the Gospel through the new media means not only to insert expressly religious content into different media platforms, but also to witness consistently, in one’s own digital profile and in the way one communicates choices, preference and judgments that are fully consistent with the Gospel.”Under Benedict, the Vatican has made significant efforts in expanding its online presence. It has a dedicated YouTube channel and a Pope2You.net portal that links to the papal iPhone and Facebook apps. For his part, however, the 83-year-old Pope admits he’s not particularly Internet savvy – he writes everything longhand. And despite his urgings for “young people above all to make good use of their presence in the digital world,” Archbishop Celli acknowledges that the Pope may have never been on Facebook. He seems to be a fan nonetheless. first_img ZIKA Press Release Related Items:annamae williams, cockburn town medical center, Dengue Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Health advises on best practices to avoid mosquito bites Recommended for you Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppGrand Turk, October 1, 2014 — It was said to be an emotionally horrible scene on Monday morning when 53 year old Annamae Williams was pronounced dead at the Cockburn Town Medical Center in Grand Turk. The woman, described as a sweet part of the Osprey Beach Hotel family and mother of five was said to have severe chest pains, severe headaches and problems breathing before she died, suddenly in hospital. Moments ago in a phone interview with Magnetic Media, her son, Sonny Williams confirmed that he is still too angry to speak on recording but did share that he is outraged at how his mother was treated at hospital. Sonny said he took Annamae to hospital initially last week Thursday with chest pains and headaches. Sonny said to us, ‘it was like the doctors did not even want to touch her… nothing was done, she was there for about two hours crying and then she was sent home…”The next day, they returned with Annamae at hospital. This time she was admitted according to Sonny and by Saturday morning he believes his mother was hiding the severity of her illness from the family. We are told they wanted to fly her out for medical care; Sonny said, “they didn’t know how to treat her…”Fast forward to Monday morning, “she was gasping for air when I got there” this broken sounding son explained. Sonny told me he believes she was there for quite sometime like that and he tried to get her an oxygen mask before he left the hospital. We are told his departure was in a rage, highly emotional about what he felt was poor attention and inadequate care. A family friend said this son, whom Annamae called ‘her husband’ was an emotional wreck, that ‘he hollar’ at the news of his mother’s sudden passing.Social media debate is that Annamae died of Dengue Fever. We tried to get confirmation from the Minister of Health, Hon Porsha Smith, whom Magnetic Media had reached out to again since Monday for latest updates and latest initiatives. No reply at all. Sonny told me, “Dr Grant is the one who told me she died of Dengue Fever.”Dengue Fever has been spreading fastest of the two mosquito borne illnesses in Turks and Caicos; spreading fastest in Grand Turk according to Environmental Health Director Kenrick Neely at a town hall meeting held in June at CHHS auditorium.
