‘Pay it Forward’ draw to benefit five local causes

first_imgA novel charity draw has been launched to appeal to the generosity of local businesses in the run-up to Christmas.Businesses are being asked to support charities by ‘Paying It Forward’ if they win prizes in this year’s Bumper Christmas Draw supporting St. Eunans Cathedral Parish Youth Ministries.Up to €2,000 in prizes have been donated to the fundraising initiative. The selected four local charities are the No Barriers Foundation, Little Angels Association, Donegal Hospice and St Vincent de Paul.Businesses who enter the draw can nominate any one of the charities to receive a prize. Proceeds from the draw will be donated to the Youth Ministries, while the nominated charities will be in with a chance of winning prizes such as a TV, holiday vouchers and much more.Tickets are €50 per card and business will be visited by volunteers in the coming days seeking support. Karen McGlinchey is the organiser of the Pay it Forward draw. Mass literacy campaign makes strides

first_imgLiteracy, life skills, Braille Over 600 000 South Africans who could not previously read or write will be literate and numerate by the end of this year through the government’s Kha ri Gude mass literacy campaign. She said the classes were presented for 240 contact hours and were held in communities, at times which were convenient to the learners, and take place in homes, churches, community centres and prisons. “We recognise the significance of access to information and its impact on the socio-economic conditions of our people,” she said. 12 November 2009 “The volunteers are central to the campaign and contribute not only to the teaching and learning process but also to ensuring advocacy, recruitment, monitoring, and ensuring that the campaign is a vibrant part of disadvantaged communities,” she said. The campaign enables adult learners to read, write and calculate in their mother tongue, as well as to learn spoken English, at no cost. It also integrates reading, writing and numeracy integrating themes and life skills such as health, gender, the environment and civic education.center_img Alleviating poverty Source: BuaNews Launched in 2008, the campaign has also created approximately 75 000 short-term teaching jobs, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga told the media in Cape Town this week.
