The Mexican goalkeeper would go on to become first of only three players to have played in five FIFA World Cups, the others being Germany’s Lothar Mattheus and Mexico’s Rafael Marquez.1958 – Brazil’ Pele hits three goals in a 5-2 semi-final victory over France. He is still the youngest player to have scored a hat-trick at a FIFA World Cup, aged 17 years and 244 days.2010 – For the first time in World Cup history, the two finalists from the previous tournament (in this case Italy and France) are both eliminated at the end of the group stage.2014 – Goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon becomes the oldest player in FIFA World Cup history at the age of 43 years and 3 days, surpassing the record of 42 years and 39 days set by Cameroon’s Roger Milla in 1994. Mondragon also establishes a new benchmark for the longest gap between successive appearances in the tournament, having played his last match on 26 June 1998. The previous record of 12 years and 13 days had been set by Switzerland’s Alfred Bickel between 1938 and 1950.
