South Mississippi Leaders Highlight Need to Preserve Area Bases

first_imgA group of South Mississippi leaders has started making the case for the area’s military installations, ahead of a possible BRAC round.During a meeting last week of the Biloxi Bay Chamber of Commerce, the Harrison County Military Team highlighted the importance of installations in the region, including Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, Trent Lott Training Complex in Gulfport and Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg. The group’s Mike Peterson stressed the value of having bases with diverse facilities and training opportunities located in close proximity, reported the Sun Herald.“It’s a fantastic joint training opportunity,” Peterson said, “and you don’t have to bring everything with you. Think of it as a complex where you can get all your training done.”He also urged the region to improve the installations’ military value. One critical need is moving the gate at Keesler because it does not meet Air Force security requirements.“We’ve got some work to do,” Peterson told the chamber. Dan Cohen AUTHORlast_img
